Your Journey to become an EMDR-Child Complex Trauma & Dissociation Specialist Begins Here

Training Overview

As soon as you register, you will have access to 9 hours of recorded videos that will provide the theoretical foundations and foundational skills for using EMDR therapy with children exposed to chronic and developmental trauma. You will learn theories that address complex trauma and the etiology and development of dissociation in children.

Play Video

We will cover assessment tools, differential diagnosis, and clinical interview tools for children with dissociative tendencies. We will extensively explore the latest literature and research on the effects of complex traumatization and the resulting dissociation. These fundamental concepts and theoretical constructs associated with severe trauma are delivered using a depathologizing and deshaming approach. The unique survival mechanisms and adaptations the child had to make to adapt to a traumatizing and emotionally impoverished environment are honored and d throughout the therapeutic process.

Intensive Training

Once you have watched and studied the 9-hour videos, you will be ready to attend the 36-hour intensive training, which will significantly expand your knowledge and understanding of chronic traumatization and how to organize the eight phases of treatment best. Clinicians will learn how to arrange the client history and treatment planning phase of EMDR treatment to collect essential data from the parents and the child. Powerful interventions to work with ego-states or dissociative parts are delivered while utilizing playful interventions, movement, polyvagal-based interventions, and parts work.

While the essence of EMDR therapy is preserved, it is also enriched and expanded by adjunct approaches that support co-regulation and self-regulation, interoceptive and exteroceptive awareness, and kinesthetic and proprioceptive awareness. This training will teach advanced case conceptualization using the AIP (Adaptive Information processing)  specialist model with complex cases. This program is advanced and recommended for clinicians with experience utilizing EMDR treatment.

The first part of this intensive program is dedicated to children with complex trauma with a unified sense of self, and the second part will be dedicated to children presenting with divisions and fractionation of their emerging personalities. How to work with "parts" and "dissociative parts" within the EMDR eight-phase model will be addressed. This intensive program will present a multimodal and integrative approach to EMDR therapy with very complex cases developed by Ana Gomez based on her 23 years of experience utilizing EMDR therapy with children affected by complex trauma and dissociation. This program will provide advanced protocols and techniques to work with the self-protective system of children as well as defensive adaptations and dissociative parts. We will address critical and shaming ego-states/dissociative parts, perpetrator-imitating parts, and young and animal parts. Clinicians will also learn how to set up the assessment phase to create a strong safety net and optimize the child's integrative capacities.

Processing phases, advanced interweaves, and interventions to modulate arousal will be thoroughly addressed. This training will explore the work often necessary with dissociative children during processing phases, as you may be working with strong polarizations and internal conflict within the dissociative system. You will receive abundant resources, strategies, moment-to-moment intentional decision-making, and case conceptualization strategies. The EMDR-child specialist program is highly recommended before this training but is not required. This program will not cover foundational skills of EMDR therapy with children, so it is essential that clinicians attending this training have either taken the EMDR Child Specialist Intensive Training or have experience in the use of EMDR therapy with children.

Objectives

AT THE END OF THE TRAINING YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

  1. Develop advanced case conceptualization skills and treatment plans based on the Adaptive Information Processing model (AIP), attachment theory, affective neuroscience, interpersonal neurobiology, structural dissociation theory, discrete behavioral states theory, and more.
  2. Utilize Global and phase-specific case conceptualization skills
  3. Identify and differentiate between the linear vs. circular use of the eight phases of EMDR treatment.
  4. Use advanced strategies to layer the amount of trauma through the use of “in” and “out” strategies, titration, and pendulation with children with and without fragmentation (Gomez, 2013).
  5. Utilize strategies and protocols to work directly with trauma-related phobias and sensitized and polarized defenses. Utilize strategies  to map and access the dissociative system and identify ego states or dissociative parts with children.
  6. Use multiple "access strategies" to enter and explore the inner system.
    1. Use preparation strategies specifically for children that dissociate. It includes how to talk to children about dissociation, restore dual awareness when lost, etc.
    2. How to orient "dissociative parts" in person, time, and present safety.
    3. How to work with perpetrator parts, young parts, and parent parts
    4. How to "stage" and provide a platform that optimizes the child's integrative capacities before moving into the processing phases of EMDR therapy.
    5. The use of expressive arts therapy, play therapy, stories, and more to make the process developmentally appropriate for children with complex trauma will be thoroughly addressed.
  7. Utilize "Memory entry strategies and portals" will be presented along with protocols that allow children to ease into traumatic memories that are overwhelming to the child's system.
  8. The use of interweaves will be presented that include interweaves that assist children in:
  • Modulating arousal
    • Maintaining dual awareness and a mindful presence
    • Working with trauma-related phobias
    • Challenging procedural memory
    • Recalibrating the nervous system
    • Challenging the window of tolerance
    • Maintaining safety while embracing exploration, and risk
    • Nurturing the younger self and the inner family
    • Utilizing resources during traumatic moments
    • Changing the orienting response
    • Completing truncated defenses
    • Executing new and restoring empowering actions that could not be performed during the traumatic event
    • Reclaiming dissociated, repressed, and dismissed cognitive, affective, and somatic material and reconnecting to the mind, the heart, and the body in fresh and novel ways.
