Training Overview

RECORDED VIDEOS

This training is designed for clinicians who have completed EMDR basic training. Upon registration, you will gain access to a comprehensive 9-hour course. These recorded videos provide the theory and foundational skills for using a Multimodal- Transtheoretical Approach to EMDR therapy with children. This model incorporates play therapy, somatic therapies and expressive arts therapies, all within the framework of EMDR and its eight phases of treatment. The depth of information in these 9 hours will provide a strong theoretical base, supporting your practical strategies, case conceptualization, and moment-to-moment intentional decision-making.

Intensive Training

Once you have watched and studied the videos, you will be ready to attend the 36-hour intensive training, which is rich, comprehensive, and full of creative and powerful EMDR interventions founded on solid theoretical principles. The in-person training is delivered in 5 days, and the Online training is in two three-day segments. We will cover phase one with additional information to enrich how you collect data and psychosocial history about the child and their relational milieu.

The preparation phase will be thoroughly covered with abundant play and expressive arts therapies strategies and creative ideas for stabilization, state change, and affect tolerance, as well as the child-friendly and playful delivery of EMDR protocols for stabilization and affect modulation. Co-regulation is emphasized and demonstrated throughout the eight phases and self-regulation.

Processing phases will offer child-friendly pathways to explore, identify and process trauma memories utilizing play therapy, along with powerful and child-friendly interweaves.

Even though this program is advanced, it is the intensive program that provides the most foundational experience, especially for clinicians starting to use EMDR with children.

This intensive program will present a multimodal and integrative approach to EMDR therapy developed by Ana Gomez based on her 24 years of experience utilizing EMDR therapy with children. In this model, EMDR therapy, the eight phases and procedural steps guided by the AIP model are expanded by the incorporation of attachment theory, regulation theory, the polyvagal theory, and other adjunct approaches such as Play therapy, expressive arts, somatic therapies, movement and activities and strategies coming from the field of occupational therapy focused on sensory modulation. Clinicians will learn how to deliver EMDR therapy using developmentally appropriate routes that honor the uniqueness of each child. Participants will develop strong therapeutic skills and capacities for case conceptualization, moment-to-moment decision-making, and the effective implementation of EMDR therapy with children. Theory, videos, demonstrations, and supervised practice by expert child clinicians will be combined throughout the training to provide a tangible experience.

Objectives

AT THE END OF THE TRAINING, YOU’LL BE ABLE TO:

Develop case conceptualization skills and treatment plans based on the Adaptive Information Processing model (AIP), attachment theory, affective neuroscience, interpersonal neurobiology, play therapy theory, and the polyvagal theory.

Develop advanced skills in treatment plan development and will have advanced supervised practice in global and phase-specific case conceptualization.

Develop basic and advanced skills in preparing children for EMDR trauma processing. This includes resources for stabilization and affect regulation and strategies to identify targets using playful and developmentally appropriate float back and mapping strategies.

Have a clear understanding of the role of co-regulation and how to incorporate it throughout the eight phases of treatment.

Utilize advanced preparation strategies appropriate for children and the organizing principles of the initial phases of treatment. This training will cover the skill-building model and the use of EMDR games with children to facilitate the use of the eight phases of EMDR therapy. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of making children acquainted with the different components of EMDR therapy prior to moving into the assessment and desensitization phases. Play therapy strategies will be demonstrated to help children develop cognitive, emotional, and somatic literacy so they can access the cognitive, affective, and somatosensory aspects of the trauma memories.

Utilize concrete and playful strategies to engage children during the assessment phase. In addition, clinicians will learn advanced strategies to set up processing sessions to optimize the child’s integrative capacities. These strategies are beneficial when working with children with sensitized sympathetic nervous systems and with sensitized dorsal vagal systems.

Utilize playful interweaves that are suitable for children.

Utilize the Interweave System’s Model (Gomez) using playful and child-friendly approaches to blocked processing.

Utilize moment-to-moment decision-making markers to co-create safety and establish the child’s readiness for trauma processing.

This intensive training will cover play therapy strategies that can be used during the installation, body scan, and reevaluation phases of EMDR therapy. In addition, how to help children envision a future that is in alignment with their most authentic selves and the deepest and truest longings of their hearts through the use of the future template protocol will be addressed.

Clinicians can practice in small groups and receive individualized feedback from expert companions.
