POSTPONED – EMDR Therapy with Children Presenting with Complex & Developmental Trauma
March 28, 2020 - March 29, 2020
Abstract
This workshop, organized by Life and Light: Nikhil Kaistha MS.Ed., MA., LPCC, focuses on specific strategies that will assist clinicians in following EMDR therapy principles and procedures while meeting the developmental needs of traumatized children. It also provides theoretical and practical strategies to assist clinicians working with children with dysregulation or constriction of the affective system: Children exhibiting insecure patterns of attachment, developmental trauma and dissociative symptoms. Strategies to effectively prepare children for EMDR therapy. This includes a wide and rich variety of resources for stabilization and affect regulation. How to use EMDR therapy strategies directed to titrate the amount of trauma and keep children within manageable and tolerable levels of activation to facilitate reprocessing will be demonstrated. Moreover, “access routes and portals” into the memory networks will be presented along with a wide range of child-friendly interweaves.
Schedule and objectives
First day
- Develop case conceptualization skills and treatment plans based on the Adaptive Information Processing Model (AIP). [8:30 am to 10:15] am
- Break [10:15 to 10:30]
- Identify key factors when establishing the client’s readiness for EMDR therapy trauma processing. [10:30 am to 11:45 am]
- Lunch [11:45 am to 1:00 pm]
- Effectively prepare children for EMDR therapy. This includes a wide and rich variety of resources for stabilization and affect regulation. [1:00 pm to 2:30 pm]
- Break [2:30 to 2:45]
- Use effective strategies with children to prepare the nervous system before reprocessing traumatic material to optimize the child’s integrative capacity. [2:45 to 4:15 pm]
Second Day
- Use “staging” strategies and provide a platform that optimizes the child’s integrative capacities before moving into processing phases of EMDR therapy. [8:30 am to 10:15 am]
- Break [10:15 am to 10:30 am]
- Use advanced interventions to provide distance, titrate and help children overcome the phobia of the trauma and its accompanying effect. [10:30 am to 11:45 am]
- Lunch [11:45 am to 1:00 pm]
- Use a wide range and types of interweaves that are child-friendly and more suitable for children. [1:00 pm to 2:30 pm]
- Break [2:30 to 2:45 pm]
- Use a wide variety of strategies geared to modulate arousal during reprocessing with children that tend to move into hyper- or hypo-arousal states. [2:45 pm to 4:15 pm]
Continuing Education Credits
Participants who attend the full 2 days workshop will receive 12 hours of continuing education credits from MN boards of Psychology, Social Works, Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy. The workshop is also approved to earn 12 EMDRIA credits.
