Module 1: Decision-Making Points During Phase One- History Taking and treatment Development

January 23, 2026

Duration: 3 hours
Fee: $89

Hours: 10 am to 1 pm ET

This module focuses on Phase One of EMDR therapy, emphasizing history-taking and treatment planning as the foundation of effective case conceptualization. Key decision-making points guide clinicians in identifying essential themes and relational dynamics to shape a tailored treatment approach. We will begin by addressing how to explore the client’s integrative capacities—the ability to link sensory, emotional, cognitive, and relational experiences into a coherent whole—as well as their mentalizing capacities, including reflective functioning, theory of mind, and the capacity to hold self and other in mind. Clinicians will also learn how to identify processing styles and tendencies, including affect tolerance, symbolic capacity, associative fluidity, and dissociative thresholds, which serve as essential indicators for treatment pacing and intervention planning.

Clinicians will learn to:
  • Gather comprehensive information from both caregivers/parents and the child or adolescent, ensuring a well-rounded understanding of the client’s clinical landscape
  • Strategies for integrative information gathering from the child, caregivers, family system, and relevant collateral systems (e.g., school, medical, judicial), with an emphasis on epistemic trust and attuned inquiry
  • Attune to the client’s unique biological rhythms to take information that can support treatment organization
  • Information gathering, rhythm and pace of data collection
  • Where to start and how to be strategic about collecting psychosocial history
  • Recognize the influence of attachment patterns and mentalizing capacities on how clients recall, narrate, and organize their personal histories during the intake and history gathering process
  • This module equips participants to establish a solid foundation in Phase One, setting the stage for responsive and effective EMDR therapy
